Making their US debut, Florence and the Machine were in high spirits at their sold-out New York show last night and weren’t afraid to show it. The singer and her band only have one more scheduled date in the States this year and the audience seemed to grasp the urgency of the night.

The audience was dotted with celebrities including ‘Gossip Girl’ stars Penn Badgley and Blake Lively, who swayed with the crowd to opener Holly Miranda and her backing band — none other than Nada Surf — before ascending to the VIP balcony. But the crowd also included a delighted, vocal gathering of fans who could hold many a tune and keep up with their lyrics.

‘It turned off literally every girl at the party,’ ‘Gossip Girl’ star says of bloody makeup.

Penn Badgley is arguably a pretty good-looking guy with a pretty hot girlfriend, his “Gossip Girl” co-star Blake Lively. But as it turns out, the actor hasn’t always come up with the best ideas for Halloween costumes. In fact, one year his idea was so bad there wasn’t a girl in sight who was willing to chat him up.

“I was 14 years old and … went to [Burbank, California, costume shop] Cinema Secrets and I got a big old prosthetic scar and blood dripping from my face done so that it looked really nice,” he said. “It was the worst idea ever because it turned off literally every girl at the party.”

It was an experience that seems to have stuck with the 22-year-old all these years later. “And I was 14, thinking I was so hot. It was terrible,” he said. “It was the worst idea I ever had.”

As for this year, the actor admitted he hasn’t finalized any costume ideas yet. “I don’t know. My birthday’s the day after, so at midnight every Halloween it becomes my birthday,” he said. “Well, I’m sure I’ll do something fun.”
